SUMMARY:The Betel Nut Tree Mystery by Ovidia Yu | Sing Lit Book Club
DESCRIPTION:This programme requires registration.\n\n \n\nAbout the
Programme  \n\nJoin us at Singapore Literature Book Club for an exclusive
discussion of the featured book with the author present. As this will be an
interactive session\, please come prepared to discuss the book and share
your thoughts!     \n\n \n\nAbout the Book \n\nSingapore is agog
with the news of King Edward VIII’s abdication to marry American heiress
Wallis Simpson. Chen Su Lin\, now Chief Inspector Le Froy’s secretarial
assistant in Singapore’s newly formed detective unit\, still dreams of
becoming a journalist and hopes to cover the story when the Hon Victor
Glossop announces he is marrying an American widow of his own\, Mrs Nicole
Covington\, in the Colony. But things go horribly wrong when Victor Glossop
is found dead\, his body covered in bizarre symbols and soaked in betel nut
juice. \n\n \n\nAbout the Author \n\nOvidia Yu was born in\, lives in and
writes about Singapore. She spent her schooldays in the science stream and
it was only after she found herself in medical school that she became aware
she didn’t want to spend her life as a doctor. \n\nIt was after dropping
out of college that Ovidia entered her first writing competition. Her short
story ‘A Dream Of China’ won first prize in the Asiaweek short story
competition that year. Although she had been writing her own stories almost
as long as she had been reading\, it was only then that she dared to think
about becoming a writer. \n\nIn addition to short stories\, she has also
written plays\, novels and a children’s book\, The Mudskipper. But now
Ovidia is focusing on trying to figure out how to write the kind of books
that made her fall in love with reading in the first place—traditional
mysteries. \n\n \n\nAbout Singapore Literature Book Club
